What is optometry?

Optometry is the visual science which deals with comprehensive eye and vision care which includes estimation of refractive errors, dispensing and manufacturing of optical aids, rehabilitation of patients with low vision condition.

Who is an Optometrist?

Optometrist is a primary Health care professional who is institutionally educated and clinically trained to correct the refractive errors of the human eye, fit contact lens and detect ocular disease. Professional education in optometry is necessary to efficiently manage clinical conditions in hospital and any optical trade including dispensing of spectacles.Optometrists also  play a vital role in eye care services along with ophthalmologist in diagnosing and treating visual problems.

Bachelors in Optometry (B.Sc Optometry)

Bachelor’s in Optometry is a 4 years full-time course that provides 3 years of teaching followed by 1-year clinical internship. Students are posted at Wavikar Eye Institute for training in specialized Eye departments viz. retina, glaucoma, optical outlets, and different workshops for the entire duration of the course at the best college of optometry in Mumbai.

The course has integrated- interdisciplinary subjects that cover Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology and Pathology, Geometrical optics, Visual optics, Ocular diseases,  Low vision, Binocular Vision, contact lenses, etc.

Curriculum Outline Subjects

1.First Year : General Anatomy, General Physiology, General Biochemistry Ocular Anatomy, Ocular Physiology & Ocular Biochemistry Geometrical Optics I & II Basic Computer, English, Nutrition & Psychology Physical Optics

2 Second Year : Visual Optics I & II Ocular Diseases I,II & Glaucoma Optometric Optics & Dispensing Optics Ocular Microbiology, Pathology & Pharmacology Clinical Examination Of Visual System & Optometric Instrumentation

3 Third Year:  Contact Lenses Binocular Vision Occupational Optometry & Low Visual Aids Paediatric Optometry, Geriatric Optometry, Systemic Diseases Public Health Community Optometry, Research Methodology & Biostatistics & Medical Law

4   Fourth Year:  Internship For 12 Months

Skills acquired:

The syllabus for B.Sc Optometry aims to prepare as a primary health care professional and to work as an independent Optometrist.

This 4-year undergraduate degree program will enable to become optometrists who can undertake-

  • Correction of Referral error of eye and Rx of glasses.
  • Detection of Ocular diseases.
  • Designing and fitting of contact lenses, aniseikonic lenses, and low vision aids.
  • Diagnosis and orthoptic treatment of strabismus.
  • Primary eye care in schools, colleges, urban slums, rural areas, and occupational optometry in industry.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • The candidate who has passed Higher Secondary (10+2) with 50% marks with physics, chemistry, biology group, for open category and 40% HSC (10+2 course) reserve category. If sufficient number of eligible candidate is not available then eligibility of HSC (PCB) criteria may be relaxed, subject to the approval from MUHS, Nashik.
  • The candidate has attained the age 17 years as on 31st December of the year of the admission.
  • The candidate has to furnish a certificate of Physical Fitness form registered Medical Practitioner at the time of admission.
  • The preference will be given to candidate who have passed 10th & 12th std. from Maharashtra.
  • 15% of seats intake capacity will be reserved for constitutional reserve candidates
  • 25% of seats of intake capacity will be filled by the institution as institutional quota seats.
  • The Hostel accommodation will not be provided to the admitted students.
  • Rules of Tie breaker HSC (10+2) candidates.
    • Candidate with Higher PCB marks will be preferred.
    • The candidate with higher marks in Biology at HSC will be preferred.
    • If tie persist then candidate with higher marks in Chemistry at HSC will be preferred.
    • If tie persist the older candidate will be preferred.


  • We are affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS).


  • Application Forms for the Diploma in Optometry course is uploaded in the website.
  • Diploma in Optometry: Last date of submission of application form is 16th  December, 2021.
  • Degree admissions are done online by DMER.

Dr.Chandrasekhar Wavikar


Dr. Wavikar is considered as a key opinion leader in advanced cataract surgery and LASIK. He has pioneered laser cataract surgery and was the first eye surgeon in Asia to perform bladeless cataract surgery by this path breaking technology. Dr. Chandrashekhar Wavikar graduated from Grant Medical College and did his post graduation from Grant Medical College (Sir J. J. Hospital). He followed it up with obtaining international training in his specialized area of expertise: • Training in refractive surgeries namely Phakic IOL, PRL, PRK, and LASEK in Italy. • Training in LASIK by Wavelight in Germany. • Training in DSAEK [Endothelial Keratoplasty] in Singapore. • Accredited for implantation of RESTORE multifocal IOL & Acrysof Toric IOL by Alcon. • Training in laser refractive surgery in Australia.

Dr.Chandrasekhar Kale

Vice Principal

Dr.Chandrasekhar Kale is the Vice Principal of Wavikar College of Optometry.He is a practicing Pediatric Ophthalmologist and squint specialist.He has done MS Opthalmology from KEM hospital.He underwent his fellowship training in pediatric ophthalmology from prestigious institute of Narayana Netralaya, Bangalore.He has 15 years of experience in Ophthalmology.

Dr.Vaishali Nabar:


Dr.Vaishali Nabar did her fellowship in Retina from Academisch Ziekenhuis Maastricht (AZM) The Netherlands. She also underwent specialized training in cataract surgery, retinal detachment surgery and certain Lasers. During her extensive career she has performed various ophthalmic procedures including 600 cataract surgeries, 30 retinal detachment surgeries and various other ophthalmic procedures. She is also associated with Wavikar College of Optometry and conducting lectures.

Dr.Anjali Aundhkar:


Dr.Anjali Aundhkar has done her MBBS from VMMC Solapur and completed DOMS from Government Medical college Miraj.She has been into ophthalmic practice since 25 years. She is working as consultant in general Opthalmology with Wavikar Eye Institute since 2010.She is also associated with Wavikar college of Optometry and conducting lectures.

Ms.Meera Korde

Executive Director

Ms.Meera Korde is the Executive Director of Wavikar College of Optometry. She is also the chairperson of Saraswati Vidya Prasarak Trust and administrator of Saraswati Vidyalaya. She was the member of Maharashtra State Board of secondary and Higher secondary board of state and regional level. She is the Recipient of Thanebhusan Award. She is also associated with Maharashtra Gymnastics Association for ten years and Gymnastic Federation of India for ten years.
