PAEDIATRIC FAQS

Most of the refractive errors (especially astigmatism) are present since birth .Hence it’s very important to identify them at the earliest to ensure proper development of the vision process.

Ideally a detailed ophthalmic evaluation is mandated at 3 years of age

Yes. The pediatric ophthalmologist will instill Cycloplegic eye drops and then check the refractive error by the procedure called retinoscopy, wherein the child need not be required to read any letters.

If your child has high refractive error then his vision will not develop properly if glasses are not worn. Hence if your doctor has prescribed your child glasses then he must start using the glasses as early as possible irrespective of the age of the child.

No. it’s a misconception that glass number reduces after constant wear of glasses .On the other hand its more likely that the refractive error will increase with the child’s age till 18 years.

Lazy eye is a condition where the visual development is restricted due to uncorrected refractive error or uncorrected squint.

Squint is a condition when both the eyes do not look in the same direction. It can occur in children as well as in adults

Squint can be corrected either by wearing glasses or by surgery.

When a child is having a squint, his binocular vision (ability to see with both the eyes together i.e. 3-D vision) is very poor. In order to get back the normal binocular 3-D vision it is very imperative to operate the child as early as possible.

Squint surgery being a day care procedure, the child will be discharged on the same day.
