I take immense pride in introducing ‘Wavikar Eye Institute- College of optometry’. The college became functional in the year 2011 with very few students. Thereafter, we have number of satisfied students increasing every year. We have the curriculum recognized by MUHS including

  • Bachelor’s in Optometry
  • Diploma in Ophthalmic Technical Assistant ( DOTA)

Recently we have introduced a comprehensive course in ocularistry – The Science behind artificial Eye.

  • Certificate Program in Ocularistry

All our students are given training in communication skills, computers, accounts and management, language development skills to attain overall development. As far as practical experience goes Wavikar Eye Institute is one of the state-of-the-art tertiary eye care hospital spread over 35000sq.ft providing comprehensive eye care under one roof. We ensure that the same gold standards are applied to the education also.

Optometry is a profession that provides a spectrum of challenging and extremely rewarding career in paving the way from darkness to light. This is one of the highly paid profession in India as well as abroad.

Programs and Courses

We have three Courses offered in our Institute

  1. Bachelors in Optometry (B.Sc Optometry)
  2. Diploma in Ophthalmic Technical Assistant ( DOTA)
  3. Certificate program in Ocularistry

Bachelors in Optometry (B.Sc Optometry)

Bachelor’s in Optometry is a 4yrs full time course provides 3 years of teaching followed by 1 year clinical internship. Students are posted at Wavikar Eye Institute for training in specialized Eye departments viz. retina, glaucoma, optical outlets and different workshops for the entire duration of the course.

The course has integrated- interdisciplinary subjects which cover Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology and Pathology, Geometrical optics, Visual optics, Ocular diseases, sports vision, Low vision, Binocular Vision , contact lenses etc.

 

Skills acquired:

The syllabus for B.Sc optometry aims to prepare as a primary health care professional and to work as an independent Optometrist.

This 4 year undergraduate degree program will enable to become optometrists who can undertake-

  1. Correction of Referral error of eye and Rx of glasses
  2. Detection of Ocular diseases
  3. Designing and fitting of contact lenses, aniseikonic lenses and low vision aids
  4. Diagnosis and orthoptic treatment of strabismus
  5. Primary eye care in schools, colleges, urban slums, rural areas and occupational optometry in industry
  6. Optometric counselling of patient with partial sight, colour blindness and hereditary vision defects ( Visual rehabilitation)

Diploma in Ophthalmic Technical Assistant ( DOTA)

Diploma program is 2 year course followed by 1 month internship in the hospital. However students at our institute start practising from second year onwards. Integrated subjects like basic sciences, eye diseases, optics and refraction , community eye care, OT management, Clinical techniques and dispensing optics and secretarial skills give much scope for improving their technical skills

 

Objectives:

  1. To enable students to assist the ophthalmologist in eye institutes, hospitals, primary eye care units
  2. To enable students to estimate refractive errors and dispense glasses
  3. To enable students to use common instruments in the outpatient units and perform simple ophthalmic procedures under supervision
  4. To enable students to conduct school screening and community screening programmes to assist vision 2020- Right to sight India
  5. To enable students to participate in eye health promotion activities in the community

Certificate program in Ocularistry

An ocularist is a carefully trained technician skilled in the art of fitting, shaping and painting ocular prostheses. In addition to creating it, the ocularist shows the patient how to handle and care for the prosthesis, and it provides long-term care through periodic examinations.

 

Objectives:

  1. To provide knowledge & to develop practical skills
  2. To enhance clinical skills to support the ophthalmologist.
  3. To upgrade technical skills in preparation of prosthesis and maintenance of instruments.

Outcome of the course

By the end of the course the student will be able to:

  1. Make, fit and do follow-ups with ocular disfigured patients confidently.
  2. Promote patient centred care with continuous quality improvement
  3. Apply scientific management practices under supervision of an ophthalmic department.

Eligibility:
The candidate should have passed 10th class from any recognized Government Board.




Eligibility Criteria & Course Duration (in weeks)

SSC/ 12th (Commerce) – 16 weeks

12th Science – 14 weeks

D.Opt/B.Opt/M.Opt – 12 weeks
