Design Ideas Competition

Thane vision 2030 is a concept floated by Thane Vaibhav and Know Your Town. The Thane Vision 2030 design ideas Competition is floated in Collaboration with Indian Institute of Architects, Thane Centre. The competition will be in two categories e.g.

Category 1: Undergraduate students of Architecture from Architecture Colleges

Category 2: Post graduate students and/or Fresh Graduates with students graduated from 2020, 2021 & 2022. The entry shall be with a group of participants (minimum 3 and maximum 5). The shortlisted entries will be displayed in an exhibition to be held on December 8.9.10 – 2023 The intent of the competition is to have interesting ideas that would help develop Thane as futuristic, environmentally sustainable, smart and people centric city.

The details of the competition are as follows

1. Introduction.

Thane the city has a great history to boast. A city since sixth century has mentions about Thane in many scripture and manuscripts by travellers from various parts of the world. Thane was a capital of North Konkan during Shilahar dynasty and was a major centre of trade with over 7 fortified port from Vasai to Kaylan that were centres of import export by waterways. Thane used to export a special cotton fabric “Tansai” (Tansa reservoir is named after the same”. It also used to export grans, pulses, honey and teak wood. The horses were imported to thane at Godbunder fort.

Since past 800 years Thane is a mix of multiple communities settled in the city with the religious places of all faiths located in the inner city that are all heritage sites e.g. Kopineshwar temple. Agyari, synagogue, St John Church, Mosque, Jain temple etc. In recent times Thane is one of the most preferred city to live and work with a culturally vibrant and naturally rich ecosystem. The city is fast growing with major infrastructural changes and population touching 25 lacs.

Recent years many cities in the world are floating with ideas about the future of the cities and how they will shape up in recent times. Taking a cue there is a thought of appealing young creative minds of the architecture students to take a pick on Thane as future ready city and how it can shape up as a futuristic city by 2030. With Thane’s inherent setup, historical and natural heritage and current growth, Thane Vaibhav, KYT and Indian Institute of Architects, Thane Centre is floating an Ideas competition for students of Architecture as part of a larger initiative “Thane Vision 2030”

For this competition, use your creativity and expertise. Although your plan will not be implemented, your thoughts might still spark discussion in the future. The quality of your ideas, including those that improve the environment, reduce carbon emissions, promote social interaction, heritage and history preservation or even speculate on what life may be like in a future city, rather than their forms or aesthetic appeal should be the focus of your submission.

2. Brief.

The competition is open to Students of Architecture from Architecture colleges in India and young Architects. The city of Thane with its wide range of historically and naturally important sites it is proposed to float ideas along the major arterial road passing through the city stretching from the Railway overbridge till Cadbury junction a 2.5 Km stretch. This is also known as Eastern express highway that connects thane to Mumbai towards south and continues as Godbunder Road passing through the city and connecting to the other end of Mumbai i.e. Dahisar and also to the Ahmedabad Highway.

The said stretch has a 6 to 8 lane high way with 2 lane service roads on both sides and a stretch of green buffers that separate the highways and service roads. Along the same stretch Orange line 5 of the Mumbai Metro is planned and is under construction. Four proposed metro stations fall within this stretch namely Cadbury Junction, Mahpalika Marg, RTO Thane and Teen Haath Naka. There are two major flyovers within this stretch. A new Thane station is proposed between Thane railway station and Mulund in the site of mental hospital that would be at a walking distance from Teen Hath Naka.

The purpose of this competition is to come up with ideas of urban interventions that would showcase the historic heritage, promote social interaction, Help improve the environment and speculate the future of Thane and its happiness index.

Participants can propose Ideas along the buffer zones, below flyovers and even above the arterial road without disturbing multimodal transit systems.

Participants may come up with a concept level idea for the entire stretch and demonstrate any one idea with details.

 Here are some directions one can explore (team may address some/all/select pointers listed below and or may add more issues and concerns they may find necessary for proposing their ideas)

Smart technology,

Future of cities with introduction of ICT and AI,

Smart Transit systems,

Net Zero ecosystems, Kinetic structures,

Eyes on street,

User centricity

Ease of Commute

Last mile connectivity

Immersive experience

New age info-media and its use for Showcasing Heritage of the city etc.

The ideas shall be a demonstration of how the stretch will shape in next 10 years and how it can be an experiential and welcoming entry path to the city for the people passing by and an interesting social interaction spaces for the citizens.

It is expected to come up with intelligent, disruptive and future proof solutions and so participants shall push their creative imaginations to the limits.

3. Eligibility for Participation

     a. The competition shall be held in two categories :

Category 1: Open for all undergraduate students from Architecture colleges.

Category 2: Open for all Postgraduate students pursuing Architecture, Design, Urban design etc. and Recently graduated architects post 2020.

      b. There can be a team of minimum 3 and Maximum 6 Participants per entry.

      c. There can be any number of teams participating from one college.

      d. For category 2 the Young architects and Postgraduate students can also form a team.

      e. For category 1, The students will have to fill a registration form along with a soft copy of a letter from the college Principal mentioning the names of the students in the team. The students can choose a unique name for their team.

       f. For Category 2, the participants shall submit either a letter from the institute from where they are following their post-graduation or the degree certificate in terms of young professional.

4. Criteria for Judging.

Weightage will be given to the following:

– Creativity and innovation

– Originality

– Contribution to sustainability

– Narrative

– Futuristic thinking

– Showcase and interpretation of the historic city

– Immersive experiences

 and any other aspects the participant may find suitable for the Ideas

5. Timeline.

      5. Judging:

          a. primary round close jury:                                                                          December 2nd and 3rd 2023           

          b. informing shortlisted finalists and  submission of Printed panels:  December 4th to 8th 2023                                          

          c. Presentation and open jury of the finalists:                                           December 9th 2023                                                                    

      6. Exhibition of select entries:                                                                       December 9thth and 10th 2023

      7. Announcement of winners:                                                                           December 10th in the awards ceremony

11. Submission Requirements

(i) The content shall be presented in maximum 4 no of   A2 Sheets, (portrait.) and a maximum 3-minute Audio Video film in MP4 format

That shall contain

  1. Master layout with schematic ideas and or 3d representation of the whole idea.
  2. Details of one specific idea with drawings, illustrations, photos of physical study models, views etc. to explain the idea in totality. (To be submitted in PDF format for the preliminary round)
  3. The film shall contain the narrative of the idea, digital simulations (walkthrough/flythrough) to explain the complete idea and design solutions.
  4. The participants whose entries are shortlisted for the final jury will be informed and they will have to submit the Prints of the Panels on Foam board, Physical Model/s and The AV MP3 file on a Pen drive.
  5. The entries shortlisted for the finals will be exhibited during the event and after the Jury the winning entries will be tagged in the exhibition.

12. Disqualification

a) Failure to comply with rules, requirements and procedures may lead to disqualification.

b) Late submission may lead to disqualification.

c) The Jury shall have the sole discretion to accept or disqualify any entry for whatever reasons.

d) The entries shall contain only the code given by the organisers and the team name selected by the participants. Entries containing names of participants. Participating college and any such information may be disqualified as we intend to carry out a fair jury process.

13. Jury’s Decisions

The Jury is the sole arbiter of the competition and its decisions are final and binding.

14. Exhibition & Publication

The organisers reserves the right to retain the works for the purposes of exhibition, publicity and promotion, subject always to the prevailing Copyright Act.
